Fldigi co-author Dave Freese, W1HKJ, is the latest guest speaker to be announced for the 2016 Stone Mountain Hamfest and ARRL Georgia State Convention in November.
Freese is responsible for the development and distribution of the Fast Light Digital Modem Application (Fldigi) suite of computer programs used for amateur and emergency communication. Fldigi is freeware available either for download or with popular digital interfaces like the SignaLink USB. It is one of the most popular digital programs in use by hams.
A longtime employee of the U.S. Coast Guard and a ham since 1957, Freese says he operated CW almost exclusively until 1999, when he was introduced to digital communications and took to it “like a duck to water.”
In 2012, Freese’s work with Fldigi earned him the ARRL Special Technical Service Award and a letter of appreciation from then-ARRL President Kay Craigie, K3NK.
If you’re considering trying out digital hamming, you can’t miss this presentation by Freese. We’ll see you in November at the Hamfest!
The ticket booth for this year’s Stone Mountain Hamfest and ARRL Georgia State Convention is now open — and there’s incentive to buy your ticket sooner rather than later.
Hams who purchase their tickets before Oct. 30 will be entered in a drawing for a SignaLink USB sound card interface. Connect it to your PC and radio, and you’re good to go for almost any digital mode!

Master radio instructor Gordon West, WB6NOA, will speak via Skype at this year’s Stone Mountain Hamfest and ARRL Georgia State Convention in Lawrenceville.
West is author of the popular series of ham-radio license study guides sold by The W5YI Group. A licensed ham for 55 years, West has been teaching radio classes for four decades.
West’s dynamic speaking style is both a great motivator to learn and the perfect introduction to amateur radio. If you’re thinking of getting a ham license, of upgrading — or even of introducing a friend to the hobby — you can’t miss this presentation.
This year’s Stone Mountain Hamfest and ARRL Georgia State Convention welcomes Eric Nichols, KL7AJ, as speaker and guest.
A prolific author with a knack for making complicated concepts easy to understand, Eric has written dozens of articles for QST, QEX, and other major ham publications. He’s a two-time recipient of the Bill Orr, W6SAI, Technical Writing Award given by the American Radio Relay League — and he has a great sense of humor.
In addition to speaking, Eric will moderate via Skype a talk by a leading figure in ham-radio education. Watch our website for more details!
